If It Ain't Broke, Then Don't Fix It
But what if it's about to break?
When most people think of retirement, they give thought to all the free time they will have. Time to spend with loved ones, time for travel around the world, time for put-off hobbies, etc. What most people don't think about is how they will pay for their lifestyle once the income stops. The majority of people think that Social Security will replace their normal income. And this couldn't be further from the truth!!
Unfortunately, Social Security is under increasing pressure from the largest section of our society, the Baby Boomers. Furthermore, once the majority of Baby Boomers begin taking Social Security, this system is going to be severely strained, potentially broken (read: unavailable).
What is incredible about this is the fact that mainstream society is completely unaware of how 'tapped' social security is about to become. What's even scarier is the fact that someday - within most of our lifetimes - Social Security may take the path of the dinosaurs and become completely extinct.
This is why you are seeing so many people in our government scramble to reform existing legislation to automatically force individuals to begin saving for retirement. Legislators are not doing this out of the goodness of their hearts. Rather they see the iceberg dead ahead and they are trying to avoid it (without notifying the people on board).
